Meghan Trainor Opens Up About Surrogacy Journey for Baby No. 3

Singer Meghan Trainor is sharing the deeply personal story behind the birth of her third child, daughter Mikey Moon

In an exclusive interview, the Grammy winner explains why she and husband Daryl Sabara turned to surrogacy after traumatic past pregnancies, offering a message of openness and gratitude for this path to parenthood.

The Medical Decision Behind the Surrogacy

For Trainor and Sabara, parents to sons Riley, 4, and Barry, 2, surrogacy emerged as a necessary medical choice after careful consultation.

It wasn’t our first choice, but we had endless conversations with our doctors on this journey, and this was the safest way for us to be able to continue growing our family.

Trainor tells PEOPLE. The couple welcomed their daughter on January 18 via a surrogate, whom Trainor calls one of the most selfless, strong, and loving people I’ve ever met.

Contrasting Experiences: From Trauma to Trust

Trainor's journey to her daughter stands in stark contrast to her previous labors. She has been candid about suffering PTSD after the birth of her first son, Riley, whom she endured a 45-minute surgical procedure alone while he was treated in the NICU.

Following her second son's birth, she experienced a severe breaking point, writing that she felt unsafe to hold her crying baby while her own body felt like it was failing.

This time, the experience was rooted in constant communication and care.

She graciously answered our many check-in texts to make sure she was doing okay, Trainor says of their surrogate. We felt so connected throughout the entire journey.

Advocating for Openness in Family Building

Now, with her family complete, Trainor is using her platform to normalize surrogacy. "I want people to know that surrogacy is just another beautiful way to build a family.

It’s not something to whisper about or judge," she states. "Every family’s journey looks different, and all of them are extremely valid."

The singer, who will release her new album Toy With Me on April 24, finds profound purpose in motherhood despite its challenges.
