Macclesfield Forward Ethan McLeod Dies in Car Accident on M1
The 21-year-old footballer tragically passed away Tuesday night after his team's match in Bedford. The club describes his loss as "devastating."
MACCLESFIELD — Macclesfield FC forward Ethan McLeod has
died following a car accident on the M1 motorway. The 21-year-old was returning
from his team's National League North match at Bedford Town on Tuesday night
when the collision occurred.
The accident happened around 10:40 PM GMT near
Northampton. Reports indicate his white Mercedes collided with a barrier.
McLeod had been an unused substitute in the match earlier that evening.
Club and Football Community in Mourning
In an emotional statement, Macclesfield FC said the news
had "devastated our entire club." They described McLeod as an
"incredibly talented" player and a "well-respected member"
of the squad with a "lust for life."
"The deep mental scars elicited from Ethan's passing
will undeniably never heal," the club added, promising his "vibrant
legacy will never fade."
A Rising Career Cut Short
McLeod began his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers'
academy at age seven. He progressed to their under-21s and had loan spells at
non-league clubs before joining Macclesfield in July after a successful trial.
The pacey forward made five appearances for the Silkmen,
scoring two goals. His last match was in an FA Trophy fixture this past
Saturday.
Tributes and Support Pour In
Wolverhampton Wanderers, where McLeod's younger brother
Conor currently plays, said they were "heartbroken." The Premier
League club pledged to support the family and will hold a minute's silence
before their Saturday match.
Baller League's VZN FC, for whom McLeod played in season
one, also expressed devastation and sent condolences. Macclesfield's next
scheduled league match is at Alfreton Town on Saturday; a decision on its
status is pending.
